Making the most of the Eagle Ford oil and gas boom

Mario Hernandez

It’s been a good two months for economic development news regarding the Eagle Ford Shale drilling boom and its impact on San Antonio. At the November 18 groundbreaking for a $50 million operations center at Interstate 37 and Loop 1604 South, oil-field-services company Halliburton announced that it will bring 1,500 new jobs for San Antonio to the site.

San Antonio Economic Development Foundation Chair Henry Cisneros noted it was the biggest economic development announcement that San Antonio has had since Toyota. Best of all, the company said it is planning to fill 75 percent of the jobs with local hires. The Halliburton announcement followed news last month that projections for job growth in San Antonio related to the Eagle Ford Shale were being revised upward, with at least 6,000 jobs expected to be created in Bexar County by 2020.
