Finding new uses for vacant big box retail stores can sometimes be challenging. The former Albertson’s grocery store (51,000 sf), located on 5.7 acres at the corner of Landa St. and Walnut Ave. in the neighboringCity of New Braunfels, has been vacant since H-E-Bpurchased it in 2011 to control competition but plans are now underway for the City of New Braunfels to purchase the building and renovate it for use as the new City Hall.
If the building passes its environmental assessment, the New Braunfels’ City Council will finalize the purchase for a reported $2.65 million. Since the cost to renovate may exceed the total budget of $5 million, renovation may take place in phases.
