Methodist Hospital plans $200M expansion in SA’s South Texas Medical Center

Methodist Hospital recently announced plans to kick off the largest-ever expansion of its facility and adjoining children’s hospital next year — a $200 million-plus project that will include construction of two new patient towers in the South Texas Medical Center.

The project will add nearly 500,000 square feet to Methodist Hospital and Methodist Children’s Hospital facilities located at 7700 Floyd Curl Drive.  The expansion will increase their footprint in the medical center by nearly 40 percent. The price tag will be the biggest expenditure in the hospital system’s history.

Additions to Methodist’s medical center campus will include a new adult patient tower featuring beds for general acute care and critical care; a new, six-story tower for pediatric patients; a nine-story parking garage and new entrances to both hospitals.

The improvements will convert more than 90 percent of the patient rooms at both hospitals to private rooms. The expansion will increase the number of beds in the neonatal intensive care unit from 78 to 94.

Both hospitals’ emergency departments also will be expanded, marking the second time that area of the children’s hospital has been boosted since 2009.

Patient areas will be upgraded in the hospitals’ cancer and heart services, labor and delivery unit, general surgery and neurosurgery areas and pediatric services.

The improvements are scheduled to be complete in 2017.
