The University of the Incarnate Word is nearing a critical milestone in the development of its 266,000-square-foot School of Osteopathic Medicine at Brooks City Base. UIW President Lou Agnese expects the $35 million project will have a transformative impact on South San Antonio, ultimately leading to the creation of the city’s second major medical center.

That initial phase of the medical school project will include the renovation of about 130,000 square feet of space in existing Brooks City Base infrastructure previously used by the U.S Air Force. The second phase, which will include the renovation of more than 130,000 additional square feet of existing Brooks’ space, should be completed by next summer.

Once completed, UIW plans to welcome its first class of 150 medical students in August 2017. He points to the South Texas Medical Center, spawned in large part from the development of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio’s medical school. The school and medical center have had a massive economic impact on Northwest San Antonio, igniting investment and development in every direction.
