Texas A&M-San Antonio drives Espada North project

The sometimes overlooked South Side is seeing significant new growth led by Texas A&M University-San Antonio.  Governor Rick Perry recently signed a bill into law allowing for the stand-alone operation of the university.  The law removes the San Antonio location from under the Kingsville banner and allows for the distribution of $40 million of tuition revenue bonds to begin construction on the first building to be located on the 700 acres donated by The Verano Land Group situated just south of Loop 410 near Zarzamora St.  Anticipating the traffic and activity to come from eventually 25,000 students, local developer Tom Rohde has partnered with Walker Enterprises to develop Espada North, a 120-acre mixed-use project along Loop 410 & Roosevelt Ave.  Construction is underway on the first phase of the project which features a 14,000 square-foot retail center.  Preleasing includes Subway.
