Fast track growth for H-E-B

Local grocer H-E-B continues to rapidly expand its presence in the San Antonio area.  Smaller stores are being replaced with larger ones.  H-E-B announced plans to open twenty new stores in Texas and Mexico this year building on the 18 new stores added in 2010 and the six new stores completed in 2009.

According to the company’s website, H-E-B now has 300 stores with 57 located within a 50-mile radius of San Antonio.  Earlier this month, H-E-B opened a new 88,000 square-foot store at 5910 Babcock Road which replaced the 68,000 square-foot store located across the street in the Carillon Hills shopping center.   Additional tenants such as Radio Shack, Great Clips, Twin Liquors and others have leased space in the adjacent 12,000 square feet of retail space.

In February, H-E-B opened a new 112,000 square-foot H-E-B Plus at 20725 Hwy 46 in Bulverde leaving behind a smaller store nearby.  The vacated stores create a challenge to back fill especially considering that the current economy is not generating a lot of demand for retail space but San Antonio has seen a steady stream of success re-tenanting vacant big boxes with trade schools, call centers and other alternative uses.

Later this year, a new H-E-B is expected to open at 420 W. Bandera Road in Boerne and a new H-E-B Plus will open at 19565 I-35 S in Lytle.  Looking ahead, groundwork started at Loop 1604 & Bandera where H-E-B is expected to construct a larger store to replace the existing adjacent location.
