RoomStore closing 5 S.A. stores

RoomStore Inc. is in the process of closing its five San Antonio retail outlets as part of a bankruptcy reorganization.

TheSan Antoniostores are among 25 locations in the retailer’s 63-store chain that are holding store-closing sales. The sales, which started last weekend, have been billed in ads as a “total liquidation” of the individual stores.

RoomStore sought bankruptcy protection in December in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Richmond,Va., where the company is based.

The filing follows the bankruptcy of other furniture retailers. Lack’s Stores, a 36-store chain based in Victoria, folded after filing for bankruptcy in late 2010. Earlier in 2010, Furniture Factory Warehouse also filed for bankruptcy.

RoomStore occupies two former Lack’s locations in San Antonio.

After the stores close, RoomStore will leave behind about 175,000 square feet of commercial space in San Antonio. The vacancies aren’t expected to be a big blow to the local retail commercial real estate market, said Kim Gatley, a vice president at REOC San Antonio.

The five stores and their square footage are: 5219 De Zavala Road (31,200 sf), 4342 N. Interstate 35 (30,700 sf), 6709 NWLoop410 (25,500 sf), 2600 SW Military Dr ( 45,000 sf), and 8611 Perrin Beitel Road (44,000 sf).
