Recent job announcements bode well for strong 2014

The San Antonio Express-News recently reported that Keith Phillips, senior economic policy adviser for the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, expects the San Antonio metro area to add about 22,400 jobs this year which will expand the job base by 2.5 percent.

Recent announcements support that optimistic forecast.  JPMorgan Chase, for example, recently announced plans to hire 250 full-time workers this year in San Antonio.  Similarly, locally-based SWBC plans to fill more than 150 positions and Home Depot reported plans to hire 750 associates to support their 18 San Antonio store locations.

GE Oil & Gas Inc. is expanding its operations in the San Antonio area by hiring an additional 175 full-time workers at its Schertz plant.  Gearing up for the 2014/2015 school year, the City of San Antonio is actively looking to hire 100 teachers and staff for the Pre-K 4 SA early childhood education program.  Minneapolis-based Mortenson Construction, a key contractor on OCI Solar Power’s 400-megawatt solar project here, will hire up to 40 people to staff a new regional office in San Antonio.  Retail giant, Walmart will also contribute to job growth with the opening of several new stores in the area.

Of course, it’s not all good on the job front.  Health-care products company Kimberly Clark Corp. announced that it will close its San Antonio plant by the end of June, laying off 90 workers but San Antonio dodged the J.C. Penney bullet.  Even though Penney announced that it will be closing 33 underperforming stores across the country, none of the stores are in Texas.
