Holt Cat VP on headquarter expansion: We need to give employees reason to live and work on the East Side

cat_logo_BlockHolt Cat will be investing its future in San Antonio’s long-overlooked East Side with its upcoming new corporate headquarters and campus improvement, and it’s hoping others will follow its lead there.

Even as more of San Antonio’s corporate players are moving their offices to new product in the city’s northwest submarket — where amenities such as integrated technology, large conference rooms, cafeterias, gyms and recreational walking trails are highlighting new office construction — Holt Cat wants to bring some Class A product to its often ignored part of town.

With expansion plans that will exceed $21 million, Holt will begin work next month on the first phase of construction, which will include grounds improvements, direct access to Loop 410, roads and equipment storage areas. But the real work will begin in the first half of 2016, when the largest Caterpillar dealer in the country breaks ground on the building for its new corporate headquarters.

Spanning 144 acres, the expansion on Holt’s campus at 3302 S. W.W. White Road along the loop is just the start of a long-term investment in East San Antonio.

Tony Shedrock, the company’s vice president of general services, said that with 50 acres remaining following the new building construction, Holt’s focus will be to make the new headquarters — and surrounding neighborhood — a place employees want to be.

“We believe in the East Side and want to be on the East Side, but we need to give employees a reason to live and work here,” Shedrock said, adding that Holt’s rampant growth over the past few years have employees one on top of another. “We felt it was the time to expand because of the growth in the city, and the older building was creating some problems for employees.”

The new 84,000-square-foot, three-story building designed by local RVK Architects will be what Shedrock called “the nicest building on that side of town.”
