Planned med campus could boost West Side

The Center for Health Care Services plans to convert a former homeless shelter into a multistory medical campus. The roughly $50 million project, which will be financed with a mix of public and private funding, is expected to provide much needed access to adult mental health care services and help revitalize a long-neglected area immediately west of downtown San Antonio.

The Center for Health Care Services, the local mental health authority for Bexar County, has gutted the three-story structure at Frio and West Commerce streets that once housed the Grand Central Hotel and later SAMMinistries. The nonprofit organization has saved the brick facade and will rebuild new medical, office and retail space from the ground up inside the old shell.

“This was attractive to us because it is a prime location. It’s really the gateway to the West Side,” CHCS Vice President Allison Greer said. “We love the building. We love the heritage.”

The 122,000-square-foot complex, expected to be completed by late 2017, will house adult mental health services in an outpatient setting. CHCS plans to lease the second and third floors as medical and professional office space.

The ground floor will include about 12,000 square feet of storefront retail space.

The new campus will also include a multistory parking garage.

It’s a unique plan that could have a profound impact on an area in need of an economic lift.
