City council favored a proposal which intends to encourage economic development around the missions. This proposal aims to clean up the area and clear way for new development to include retail businesses like coffee shops, restaurants and bookstores in need by South Side residents.

The city is raising the zoning designations of some properties to encourage greater density. The South Side is seeing significant new development with the 2015 World Heritage designation and the completion of the Mission Reach section of the River Walk.

The initiative is part of the city’s broader effort to entice tourists to spend more time and money on the South Side. Along with building the Mission Reach, the city has created overlay districts around the missions to control new development. Its most recent bond package included $13 million to rehabilitate Roosevelt into a landscaped corridor friendly to pedestrians and cyclists, as well as $5 million for Presa.
