Same Drivers Move Austin, San Antonio Retail Markets at Different Pace

In the e-commerce era, retail components in mixed-use projects like The Domain in Austin are attracting shoppers, both in the state capital and in San Antonio.

A mere 80 miles separates Austin and San Antonio, the anchors of the growing Interstate 35 corridor. The two cities have some fundamental cultural differences but share certain economic drivers that have produced healthy retail real estate markets in both metros, albeit with varied results.

The most basic economic drivers common to both metro areas are population and employment growth. Like other Texas cities, the Austin and San Antonio metro areas continue to experience a steady stream of new residents and jobs.

Tech startup that sweeps clean criminal records moves from Austin to San Antonio

Legal Holdings LLC, doing business as Easy Expunctions, is a software-fueled services company that aims to sweep clean and expunge records at a price that undercuts typical law office fees. Yousef Kassim, a lawyer who graduated from St Mary’s law and Trinity University, founded Easy Expunctions, a software technology service company that uses an algorithm to search for and help expunge criminal records.

The startup, founded in Austin in 2015, recently moved its headquarters to San Antonio and set up shop in the Vogue building downtown. Its founder, Yousef Kassim, is a lawyer who attended St Mary’s School of Law after graduating from Trinity University. Kassim was licensed to practice law in 2014, records show. …Read Entire Post

Despite Setback, Lone Star Rail Moves Forward

The decision by Union Pacific to end its working relationship with Lone Star Rail District (LSRD) in February, was a blow in efforts to develop a passenger rail line between San Antonio and Austin.

Many board members said Union Pacific’s choice to stop working with Lone Star Rail was disappointing, but that they hoped the company would return. The completion of the impact study is crucial to the project, because it would enable future funding, including federal money. The district expects to finish the environmental impact process by 2018.

Walmart to Close 154 Stores Nationwide

Walmart_Logo_BurstWal-Mart Stores, Inc. has announced plans to close 154 stores in the U.S. – 29 in Texas.  This decision was based on a portfolio review which analyzed factors such as financial performance and alignment with long-term plans.  The closures target mostly Walmart Express Stores, the company’s smallest format stores, allowing Walmart to concentrate on strengthening and expanding other areas of their business. Trampoline amusement space opens in South San Antonio’s Pica Pica Plaza

South San Antonio residents can jump for joy because a new indoor trampoline park called Flip’z has opened its doors in Pica Pica Plaza.

The trampoline park covers 25,000 square feet of space at 910 SE Military Drive. It includes activities for adults, teens and children. Adults can use the park to exercise, as Zumba classes will be held there. Teens can play dodgeball on two courts or use the trampolines to dunk basketballs. There’s also a large trampoline area for younger children, ages 4 to 6.

Austin to get new military facilities

Military funds will fuel new construction in the Austin area.  The Armed Forces Guard and Reserve Center at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA) is now in the design stage.  The planned $16.5 million facility will span 250,000 square feet and is expected to replace an existing aviation support facility currently leased from the city.  Plans also call for a $5.7 million Vehicle Maintenance facility.  To ease overcrowding, a new $20 million Armed Forces Reserve Center is likely to be built at Camp Mabry.  Read more in Austin getting money for new National Guard and Reserve Centers, Austin American-Statesman, 12-12-09 and Military center near Austin-Bergstrom International Airport a go, Austin Business Journal, 12-14-09.
